Ethan woke to the scent of bacon frying and coffee brewing.

His wolf perked up right along with Brody, and Ethan couldn’t fight the smile spreading over his face as he got up and changed into clean jeans and a fresh t-shirt.

“You must be feeling better.” He walked into the kitchen and grinned at her ass in tiny shorts swaying back and forth as Rose shifted from one pan to the other.

“The ankle’s still sore, and I have to keep sitting to give it a rest, but clearly my doctor decided I was well enough to sleep on my own, so I must not be doing too bad.”

He grabbed one of the barstools and set it next to her. “Up. Let me take a look.”

“You’re not going to talk to be about how you left me in bed?” She hoisted herself up onto the stool and smirked at him. “Back to the stoic doctor.”

Ethan sighed and dropped down to his knees, gently picking up her injured ankle. “I shouldn’t have suggested we sleep in the same bed. It was unprofessional of me.”

Rose let out a snarl. “You don’t have to baby me, Ethan. I’m not an idiot. You’re freaking out because I kissed you. Because I climbed on top of you.” She shook her head. “I guess I thought maybe we could be adults about it, have some breakfast, and I could just head back to my cabin before I make any more of a fool of myself. I guess I’m not getting that lucky.”

Ethan set her foot down and rested his hands on her knees, looking up at her. “I left the bed last night because I wanted to wake you up with more kisses and not just on your perfect mouth. Because I wanted a hell of a lot more than that. But I couldn’t do that with you. Not without telling you everything.” He got up and walked to the other side of the kitchen, needing to put some distance between the two of them. “I’m not just a doctor who likes to spend time at a lake, Rose.”

Rose scowled and shook her head. “I didn’t figure you were. Is it such a bad thing to have a fling? To flirt with someone, to spend a few hours not focused on professionalism or whether something’s right?”

Ethan sighed. “It’s not that easy.” He reached for the hem of his shirt. “I need you to stay over there, on the barstool. And do your best to stay calm.”

Her brow furrowed and she gripped the edges of the stool. “Ethan, you’re scaring me.”

Rather than responding, he took off his shirt and then reached for his waistband.

“Okay, I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m not going to just sit here and watch you strip. Tell me what’s going on. If you’ve got your ex’s name tattooed on your ass or something, it’s not a big deal. If you’re not going to judge me for my past mistakes, I won’t judge you.”

“I promise, it’s not a tattoo.
